On Thursday, Feb. 7 at 7:00 pm, we welcome Author and Professor Brian Glyn Williams to discuss his book, "The Last Warlord: The Life and Legend of Dostum." Williams was an advisor to the film, "12 Strong: The Declassified Story of the Horse Soldiers," which stars Chris Hemsworth. Many of the characters from his book are portrayed in the film.

About The Book: The book details how, after 9/11, the CIA contacted the mysterious Afghan-Mongol warrior to help US Special Forces wage a covert war in the mountains of Afghanistan that ended in a stunning victory. It sheds light on how the desperate Special Forces-Afghan  cavalry  campaign succeeded against all odds in liberating Afghanistan's holiest shrine and brought warriors from vastly different cultures together to fight their common Taliban enemy. The Last Warlord shows that, far from serving as a mere backdrop for American heroics, it was the horse-mounted descendants of Genghis Khan that allowed the American military to overthrow the Taliban regime in just two months. 

About The Author: Brian Glyn Williams, PhD, is a professor of Islamic history at the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth. He has worked for the Central Intelligence Agency tracking suicide bombers in Afghanistan and is the author of Predators: The CIA' s Drone War on al Qaeda, Afghanistan  Declassified: A Guide to America' s Longest War, and The Crimean Tatars: The Diaspora Experience and the Forging of a Nation.

On Thursday, Feb 28 at 7:00 pm (postponed from Jan. 8) we welcome Will Broussard from the Mt. Washington Observatory as he presents: "Tales from the Home of the World's Worst Weather: A Talk about Mt. Washington".

While many places on Earth experience severe weather, few are inhabited by humans 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Mount Washington Observatory has been operating a continuously-staffed scientific outpost on this remote peak since 1932, providing the Observatory many remarkable stories and an intimate knowledge of the mountain.

Will shows lots of colorful photos of the summit and weather station in all seasons, tells many stories, is quite experienced with his topic and has a very accessible style. 

 You won't want to miss either of these great programs, both are free and sponsored by The Hazen Memorial Library Endowment Fund. Light refreshments will be served, no reservations necessary.
