The Hazen Memorial Library exists to serve the community. In order to effectively do this, some simple rules have been established which will help everyone use the Library most effectively.

  1. Any person who, in the opinion of Library Staff, is engaging in conduct inconsistent with the operation of the Library will be asked to leave the property. Loitering on the steps, sidewalk, handicap ramp, lawn or parking lot is not allowed. Police take notice.
  2. Food and/or beverages are not allowed in the Library, except at designated times or in designated places.
  3. The library is not responsible for lost items.
  4. The following activities are not allowed in the Library:
    • Smoking (Mass General Laws (MGL Ch.270, Sec 21-22)
    • Creating a disturbance by making noise, talking loudly, or engaging in other disruptive conduct (MGL, Ch.272, Sec. 41)
    • Disrespectful language
    • Disruptive behavior including: shouting, running, pushing, or other rowdy, rambunctious activities
    • Interfering with another person's rights to use the Library or with the Library Staff's performance of their duties
    • Playing audio equipment to that others can hear it
    • Using a cell phone
    • Misusing the rest rooms or other areas of the Library
    • Soliciting or canvassing of any kind
    • Entering areas posted "Staff Only" without permission
    • Leaving a child under the age of 10 in the Library unattended by an adult
    • Sleeping, improper use of furniture or sitting/laying on the floor
    • Threatening behavior, including, but not limited to, violence, threats of violence, and possession of weapons
    • Inappropriate contact with other patrons.
  5. All bicycles must be left in the rack provided.
  6. Persons wearing roller blades or on skateboards are not allowed in the Library. Roller blades or skateboards are not to be used on the Library property.
  7. Those who damage or deface Library materials or property will be prosecuted (MGL Ch. 266, Sec. 100). Parents can be liable for damage done by a child under 18 (MGL Ch. 231, Sec. 85).
  8. Theft of Library materials, use of false identification to obtain a Library card, or use of another person's Library card without his/her permission are against state law and can be prosecuted (MGL Ch. 266, Sec. 99).
